The Yarrow Street Family Store is starting to take shape. Now that everything is starting to fall into place the anticipation is growing and the excitement is building. Over the past few weeks the stocks have started arriving, the new clothing racks have arrived and quite a few of the clothing rails have been relocated from the old store, the carpet for the office and staffroom has been laid, the external signage has gone up and the painting has just about been completed. The changing rooms are beginning to come together and the entrance way is starting to look inviting.

There has been a fair few people involved in the set-up and I’d like to make special mention of Dave and Ringa who have done most of the redecorating and Gordon who has also put some hours in to help. Also a huge thanks to Anthea, Steve and Gordon along with Christine and all those at Tay Street who have been packing down and moving stuff across to the new store. And I’d also like to thank the youth group for the hours that they have put into getting the shop ready, another couple of weeks and we’ll get back in to doing some study, games and activities. I’d also like to thank all those that have donated materials, supplies and equipment to make the store look good and feel great.

Last night we had a group of cubs come as part of their community service to stack books, puzzles and shelves of toys as well as hang a heap of clothing on rails in preparation for us opening the doors next Monday for our first days trading. This is the second time that they have helped out, the first involved a fair bit of paint, most of which ended up on the walls – Your help has been greatfully appreciated.

We will be having an official opening a week later on the 22nd of August (possibly incorporating a late night trading evening) so that we can iron out any issues and also ensure that all the staff have familiarised themselves with the new store as it is at least three times bigger than the one they’ve been used to.

The following report has been released on The Salvation Army International website announcing that the High Council has voted and elected Andre Cox as the 20th General of The Salvation Army. For more information on how they have come to this decision and the process involved follow this link: http://www.salvationarmy.org/ihq/highcouncil2013

ON what would prove to be the final day of the 2013 High Council members entered the chamber with a sense of anticipation and solemnity, prepared for the sacred task upon which they were about to embark. The chosen song to open the day’s devotions included the prayer ‘Direct, control, suggest this day all I may think, or do or say’ (SASB 665).

The Chaplain, reading from the letter sent by the council at Jerusalem noted that the actions they proposed ‘seemed good to the Holy Spirit’ (Acts 15:28) and arose out of that council’s sense of harmony. The prayer for today’s work – the election of the next General – was that it too would result from the harmony that had been evident all week among the members. At the end of today’s voting, the Chaplain wanted every member to be able to say: it ‘seemed good to the Holy Spirit.’

The voting process was explained and the need for a clear two-thirds majority for a General to be elected from the first round of voting. Without further preamble the Vice-President began to call the names of the High Council members who, with quiet dignity befitting the sacred task on which they were embarking, left their seats, collected their voting paper and moved to the solitude of the voting booths to cast their vote.

Commissioner Cox is elected GeneralIn the early afternoon on the sixth day of the 18th High Council, Commissioner André Cox was elected as the 20th General of The Salvation Army. Commissioners André and Silvia Cox knelt together at the mercy seat while the High Council members sang: ‘I would be thy holy temple’. The commissioner then confirmed that he was willing to serve.

These days have been about the work of the High Council, however the President took a few moments to express, on behalf of the Council, thanks to the secretariat – whose work is unseen but vital – and all the non-member support staff.

High Council Communication Officer

Change of format

Over the past few days you might have noticed a slight change of format for this blog, as I try to make things easier for you the reader. I have incorporated the following pages under the Invercargill Corps Page Heading as they are all a part of what we do in our Ministry: The Message, Life Groups, iNFUSED Youth. As well as adding another area called “The Power of Giving” which will contain information about the many volunteering opportunities that we have, along with information about the appeals (Self Denial Appeal) and fundraising that we are a part of.

In the coming weeks I’ll also be looking at incorporating a number of other links and additional pages to this Page Heading so that our congregational members have all the information that they need to keep them in the loop.

Currently we have a huge amount of stuff going on: the introduction of the Sunday Night Recovery Meeting; Relocation of the Tay Street Family Store to the former Lazerland site on Yarrow Street; Development of our Community Ministries @ Leven Street to assist those in need; as well as the continuing development of our Children’s and iNFUSED Youth ministries to name just a few.

Without the assistance of those that are stepping up and taking a lead we would not be able to impact the community around us with the love of Christ! So many thanks to those involved and may God continue to bless our endeavours as we do what we can “to bring people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ“.
