Archive for November, 2020

The following excerpt was written by Kris Beckert on October 21, 2020 as part of a blog entry for the Missio Alliance entitled The Church’s Social Dilemma. In it she refers to the Netflix documentary The Social Dilemma and the issues of technology and Social Media on our lives.

She identifies 4 areas that the church can be aware of when using technology and Social Media as tools to reach an increasingly online world…

It Leads Somewhere in Real Life

A tool helps you get somewhere — it isn’t the “somewhere.” The way we use social media and online platforms as a tool leads someone toward a face-to-face encounter, next step in their discipleship, or action — not to another view, read, or scroll. What are you counting every week? What is your goal? Are you posting things that are meant to be consumed or intentionally lead somewhere, offline? Are you connecting digitally to avoid connecting IRL — in real life?

It’s a Supplement, not a Substitute

Gone are the days of handing someone a Bible — you just help them download an app. When a tool, technology is useful and can put people in touch and things at our fingertips that can help our growth in Christ. But while many would agree “the church is not the building,” would we also agree “the church is not the platform?” Just as COVID exiled us from our buildings, if we were exiled from social media and digital platforms, would we still be able to do ministry and share the love of Christ? One of the facades of a digital presence is to appear connected but be more isolated than ever. Do we know our neighbors and have real relationships with people in our vicinity, our schools, community services, and businesses? Or have Facebook events and broadcasts actually cut us off from our neighbors?

It Helps us Draw Boundaries

Social media and technology beckon our attention 24/7. During the film credits, numerous individuals give tips on how to keep it in the toolbox, including turning off notifications, deleting apps, and not giving kids smartphones until high school. We can help our congregations and neighbors by creating waves of positive influence in these areas. We can include fasting from social media as part of the fasts of the church calendar and church life. What are some creative ways your church could help families and individuals keep technology in the toolbox?

It Challenges Where we Think Real Life is

Scripture teaches us how human beings have always been in search of transcendence. Instead of looking toward the gifts created by our own hands as a way of pointing us toward our Creator, we get stuck in our fascination with the creation. And immersing ourselves in that “thing” leads to corruption of the “thing,” using the creation for that which it was never intended to do. Where is your real life? Where is your children’s real lives? Where is your church’s real life? And what is it you may be trying to escape from?

Some thought provoking questions that I’m sure we can all grapple with over the coming weeks

Blessings 🙂

What is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma is a rare and debilitating autoimmune disease which there is no cure for. It’s often progressive and sometimes, fatal. It affects every age and gender and it’s neither preventable or contagious. It confuses the best of the medical field by making it difficult to diagnose.

Scleroderma attacks the Vascular System, cutting off blood flow to extremities, resulting in Gangrene and amputation. It affects the Gastrointestinal Tract, Heart, Kidneys, Lungs, and Esophagus.

Scleroderma causes hardening, thickening, and tightening of the skin which oftentimes, causes devastating results to one’s facial appearance and one’s mobility. Scleroderma has no cure.

Scleroderma steals lives, families, friends, jobs and so much more.

This week we conclude our sermon series looking at the book of Malachi, turning our attention to the second half of chapter three and chapter 4.

In it we see the question being asked; “Who will rob God?

There are many lessons that we can learn from the book of Malachi as we endeavour to live God-honouring lives in this day and age, and we are to be examples of what it means to live out our Christian lives in such a way that people will be drawn to the ‘life and hope’ that we espouse as we reach out into our local communities and beyond.

Today at 6pm (NZ Time) we are hosting ‘Church Online’ as a facebook live video event via our Wellington City Corps and Wellington Citadel Band pages. (Link below also).

Our weekly Sunday meetings feature both the Wellington Citadel Band and the Wellington City Worship Team.

We pray that you will be blessed as we minister in these unprecedented days not only for our local community who are unable to join us in person but also to enable others around the world that currently unable to worship in their settings.

May God bless you each as you head into the coming week 🙂

As part of my devotions on Thursday morning I read the following from The Word for Today and felt it pertinent to post it as a Word of Encouragement to one and all, far and wide; as we here at The Salvation Army Wellington City endeavour to bring life and hope to the Inner City of Wellington and beyond.

If you’re struggling spiritually today, here are three thoughts that will help you: First, realise that doing God’s will isn’t always supposed to be easy. Satan, your enemy, gives up nothing without a fight, and anxiety is one of his secret weapons. That’s why the Bible says, ‘Let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up’ (Galatians 6:9 NLT). Overcomers aren’t necessarily more educated or more talented than other people, they’re just more persistent. They push beyond the point at which others quit.

Second, believe that God’s will is for your total wellbeing. You are the offspring of a perfect God, so act like it. His covenant with you is forever, so think like it. Your total wellbeing is his desire and delight, so live like it. The apostle John wrote: ‘I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers’ (3 John 2 NKJV).

Third, reach by faith for what God has promised you. Struggles act like a thief. They can rob you of time with those you love, money that could be used to achieve your goals, and energy needed to fulfil God’s purpose for your life. The prophet Isaiah said, ‘Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows… and by his stripes we are healed’ (Isaiah 53:4-5 NKJV). At the cross, Jesus purchased everything you need. So rise up in faith today and claim it, because as the Scripture says, ‘The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him’ (Lamentations 3:25 NLT).

If you don’t subscribe to The Word For Today or Word For You Today which both offer daily words of encouragement may I encourage you to do so either through Rhema or Life FM you can download it on whichever platform works for you 🙂

This Sunday, 22 November we conclude our sermon series looking at passages of Scripture from the book of Malachi. We see the question being asked; “Who would rob God?

There are many lessons that we can learn from the book of Malachi as we endeavour to live God-honouring lives in this day and age. At times this book is extremely hard hitting and blunt in places; using harsh words and phrases that leave us feeling wounded and somewhat aggrieved.

But through it all, God is wanting to get our attention and drive home His point that we have drifted away from our first love – thankfully though He has made a way for us to return to Him because He is a gracious and loving Father that wants the very best for us His chosen people, His children.

You see, we are to be examples of what it means to live out our Christian lives in such a way that people will be drawn to the ‘life and hope’ that we espouse as we reach out into our local communities and beyond.

So, if you are in the Inner City of Wellington on Sunday morning, why not come and join us @ 10:30am at 92 Vivian Street, Wellington – Limited parking is available on site via 6 Jessie Street.

For those of you that are unable to attend for whatever reason or are wanting to check us out online you can view our ‘Church Online’ Service @ 6pm (NZ Time).

Links will be posted on our Wellington City Corps and Wellington Citadel Band Facebook pages and on this site on Sunday afternoon.

Please share these far and wide amongst your friends, family, social media contacts etc. so that we can continue reaching out with God’s love to those that may need it in these uncertain times, as we endeavour to ‘bring life and hope to the Inner City of Wellington’ and beyond.

May God continue to bless and encourage you as we each endeavour to live out our Christian Faith in these challenging times that we find ourselves in 🙂

If you were unable to join us last Sunday at 10:30am in-house, or at 6pm when we hosted ‘Church Online’ via our facebook pages; Wellington City Corps or Wellington Citadel Band, you can have a recap of what we covered during our meeting by clicking on the video link below.

This week we continued our sermon series looking at the book of Malachi – exploring how our lives leave a lasting legacy for those that are watching us, regardless if we think they do or not!

As we look at the many lessons that we can learn from the last book of the Old Testament I hope and pray that we will all take on board the many aspects of our faith that God would have us adopt, so that we can endeavour to live God-honouring lives in our day and age.

We are to be examples of what it means to live out our Christian lives in such a way that people will be drawn to the ‘life and hope’ that we espouse as we reach out into our local communities and beyond. For God is calling us back to what He intended for us and our lives – To get back to where we once belonged!

We hope and pray that through the words and music that you hear, and the many talents used in His service to bring this meeting to you each week, that you will be uplifted in your spirit and encouraged as you continue trusting in God and living out your journey of faith. Knowing that through His Holy Spirit He goes with you, He is walking beside you, and He is also preparing a way forward for you.

You can subscribe to our YouTube channel and / or follow us on facebook to keep up to date with what is going on in our faith community.

God bless and have a good one 🙂
