Archive for November, 2020

This year has certainly been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for Annette & I due to my autoimmune disease diagnosis (Scleroderma & Raynaud’s) approximately two years ago.

As I’ve shared previously (Health Update, Health Update #2) it has been confirmed that I also have some permanent lung damage (hence why I need to sit while preaching on Sunday mornings).

The medications I was previously on were not necessarily doing what they were supposed to do, and earlier this year in amongst all the upheaval of Covid lockdowns within New Zealand, the respiratory specialist convinced my rheumatologist specialist that I need to go on a more intensive drug programme to help improve my overall health and wellbeing not just for the now but also long term; hopefully preventing the damage to my lungs getting any worse.

This has meant a high dose of steroids to try and clear any lingering inflammation in my lungs and also help stabilize my breathing and energy levels, and to undergo a course of chemo over a period of 6 months.

As I’m sure you can appreciate there are good days and not so good days, and some really rough days in between where I will feel as if I’ve been hit by a bus as I continue to serve the Master in these unprecedented days.

The latest infusion has certainly been a bit harder to take than previously, thankfully I haven’t had any majorly adverse effects to date. Although added to the latest dose of chemo I have reached the halfway point with regard to tapering off of the steroids, as the respiratory specialist doesn’t want me on them for a prolonged period of time as they can have significant side effects long term.

Unfortunately, within a few days I was needing to up the steroids to counterbalance the chemo as it doesn’t fully take effect for a week or so and as such I have been struggling a bit of late with energy levels and breathing.

I think I am just about starting to come right, time will tell 🙂

However, in all of this I was reminded just the other day (via the Help End Scleroderma facebook page) that I need to ‘just do what I can today, it will be enough’.

I wonder, how many of us need to be reminded of that today?

We can so easily get caught up in the busyness of life, and the hectic nature of our day to day lives that sometimes we just need to be reminded to slow down and only do what we can do for today; not getting to worked up about all the stuff that we haven’t been able to accomplish – the coulda, shoulda, woulda have done stuff if everything was normal.

If this year has taught us anything – normal is something that we more than likely will not be returning back to for quite sometime and that is OK! After-all there were some aspects of normal that weren’t exactly good for us – but that’s a whole other story.

Over the past few months or so there has been a few people that have been providing practical and emotional support for Annette and I, and we thank you immensely for that as it has been greatly appreciated. Also there are others who continue to provide ongoing prayer support, again Annette & I thank you as we continue navigating this difficult period in our life and ministry. You are truly a blessing and may God continue to bless you each as you willingly give of yourselves to support others in there times of need.

This week we continue our sermon series looking at the book of Malachi, turning our attention to the first few verses of chapter three.

In it we see the question being asked; “Who will be able to endure the day of the Lord when he comes?

There are many lessons that we can learn from the book of Malachi as we endeavour to live God-honouring lives in this day and age, and we are to be examples of what it means to live out our Christian lives in such a way that people will be drawn to the ‘life and hope’ that we espouse as we reach out into our local communities and beyond.

Today at 6pm (NZ Time) we are hosting ‘Church Online’ as a facebook live video event via our Wellington City Corps and Wellington Citadel Band pages. (Link below also).

Our weekly Sunday meetings feature both the Wellington Citadel Band and the Wellington City Worship Team.

We pray that you will be blessed as we minister in these unprecedented days not only for our local community who are unable to join us in person but also to enable others around the world that currently unable to worship in their settings.

May God bless you each as you head into the coming week 🙂

This week as part of my devotions I read the following from the Word for Today and spent some time contemplating its meaning for me in these unprecedented times that we are currently living in.

If you don’t subscribe to this daily word of encouragement may I encourage you to do so either through Rhema or you can download it on whichever platform works for you 🙂

Attitude is a little thing, but it makes a big difference. Depression, gloom, pessimism, despair and discouragement stop more people than all the world’s combined illnesses. The truth is, enthusiasm will take you where talent alone can’t. Think about it: every day talented people give in to discouragement and quit, while people with less talent and ability keep going and succeed.

Winston Churchill once quipped, ‘I’m an optimist. It doesn’t seem too much use being anything else.’ If you really, really, really believe that God is on your side, you’ll be optimistic even in the face of overwhelming obstacles and discouragement. In the Old Testament, a group of former slaves rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in just fifty-two days, and went on to prosper. How did they do it? Because their leader said, ‘Don’t surrender to discouragement. Don’t give it an inch. Fight every step of the way!’ And that prescription still works today! One of Satan’s favourite weapons is discouragement. He knows you can never be defeated unless you’re defeated in your thinking. But you have the power to overcome him. The Bible says, ‘Submit…to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you’ (James 4:7 NKJV).

When Satan brings discouragement to your door, what should you do? Don’t open the door! Don’t invite him in! Don’t accept the package! Don’t sign the receipt! Instead, submit to God – and resist him! From time to time we all experience fatigue, frustration, failure and fear. But by standing on God’s promises and drawing on his strength, you can choose not to get discouraged. The choice is yours!

Jesus Christ is the ‘Light’, the ‘Life’, and the ‘Hope’ of the World, and so much more besides – and we as his disciples regardless what we are facing should have that same attitude and persona about us that shows that we believe that that is so.

Not that we want to gloss over all the stuff that can crowd in on us, the disruptions, the doubts and fears, the despair etc. – but through our faith in Him and our trust in God the Father we need to show that in all things that we are going through we can and we will get through, and come through the other side triumphant 🙂

For we have won the victory!

Paul when speaking was to the church of Thessaloniki told the people to be encouragers and to build each other up (refer to 1 Thessalonians).

So how about in the next day or two, rather than focussing on all the bad stuff that is going on, start focussing on the good that is happening – be encouragers, not naysayers, build each other up with psalms and songs of praise, not ripping into someone or gossiping, slandering or even putting down anything that is not going the way that ‘you’ want.

That is not Christ-like and according to most counsellors, mental health advocates and the like is something that we need to ignore (although at times this can be extremely hard to do) or completely disregard, unfriend or remove from our spheres of influence all together…

Let’s be a body of believers, the church, that stands up in these days and offers encouragement to a world that seems to have lost a fair chunk of hope! For we should be bringers of Life and Hope!

Blessings 🙂

This Sunday, 15 November as we continue our sermon series looking at passages of Scripture from the beginning of chapter three of the book of Malachi, we see the question being asked; “Who will be able to endure the day of the Lord when he comes?

There are many lessons that we can learn from the book of Malachi as we endeavour to live God-honouring lives in this day and age.

You see, we are to be examples of what it means to live out our Christian lives in such a way that people will be drawn to the ‘life and hope’ that we espouse as we reach out into our local communities and beyond.

So if you are in the Inner City of Wellington on Sunday morning, why not come and join us @ 10:30am at 92 Vivian Street, Wellington – Limited parking is available on site via 6 Jessie Street.

This week as we continue our sermon series looking at the book of Malachi we turn our attention to the second half of chapter two; verses 10 – 17 and the importance of the covenant, and being faithful. We are extremely blessed to have Cadet’s Ben & Jesse Willis preach and lead our service today.

In light of the New Testament and especially in the world today, that is gripped by constant polarisation of opinions; we are to be good examples of what it means to be a Christian, God’s chosen people, a royal priesthood.

We are all leaving a life of legacy for those that either look up to us or learn from us, so it is important that we ensure that our words and our actions teach those that look up to what it means to be Christ-like.

In everything (we do we need to) set them an example by doing what is good” Paul advised Titus (refer Titus 2:7a)

As we look at the many lessons that we can learn from the book of Malachi I hope and pray that we will take on board the many aspects of our faith that God would have us adopt – so that we can endeavour to live God-honouring lives in our day and age.

Especially if we are to be examples of what it means to live out our Christian lives in such a way that people will be drawn to the ‘life and hope’ that we espouse as we reach out into our local communities and beyond. For God is calling us back to what He intended for us and our lives – To get back to where we once belonged!

May God bless you each as you head into the coming week 🙂
