The Self Denial Appeal started in 1886 when General William Booth called Salvationists around the world to give sacrificially and to deny themselves so that they could offer God’s grace and love to a hurting world.
The theme for this year’s Self Denial Appeal which starts today Sunday 17th July here in New Zealand is ‘The Ripple Effect’.
Throughout this appeal we encourage Salvationists to put aside One Weeks Salary On Missionary Sunday we will be featuring personal stories from Salvationists who have previously lived on the mission field.
They’ll be reflecting on their experiences in vulnerable communities and countries such as Myanmar, Pakistan, Fiji, Japan, Jamaica, Haiti, Tonga and Sri Lanka and how God, through The Salvation Army, has transformed many people’s lives.
To coincide with the appeal a six-week devotional series has been written by Lieutenant-Colonel Graham Durston, which can assist you to engage with the Scriptures.
It reflects on the words of the Apostle Paul, who penned the following prayer to the believers in Christ, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” Ephesians 3:20
(New Living Translation)
Paul wanted the family of God to act upon the faith they had received, he was imploring them to live out their faith and to await the universal impact of action in Jesus’ name.
I encourage you to use this opportunity to see how God can use you to create a ripple effect of his love throughout the world. (A Family Devotional and a Youth Bible Study are also available)
